How I Got Into Modeling (and How You Can Too)
I get asked this question all the time—“How did you get into modeling?”—so here’s my honest answer and everything I’d tell someone who’s looking to break into the industry today.
I was first discovered at 13 in Dallas, TX and signed shortly after. For several years, I had the opportunity to model for brands like Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, and more. But in my early 20s, I made the decision to step away from the industry and attend college. I needed time to grow, realign with my values, and figure out who I was outside of modeling.
That time away gave me clarity, and at 27, I felt a deep pull to return but this time on my own terms. I submitted myself as a curve model through agency websites. No one “scouted” me. I just started. I did my research, found the right representation, and haven’t looked back since.
So if you’re dreaming of becoming a model but unsure where to begin, here’s exactly what I’d share with you:
Start with Simple Digitals
Have someone you trust take a few natural, well-lit photos of you these are called digitals. No makeup, no filters, just clean images that show your face and body clearly. These are what agencies will use to determine if you’re a good fit. For more tips on perfecting your digitals, check out my blog post How to Take the Perfect Model Digitals.
Apply to Reputable Agencies
Do your research and apply directly through the agency’s website, not social media. Look into agencies across major markets like New York, LA, Miami, Dallas and Chicago and choose those that align with your goals and values. I submitted to all major markets in the US and waited to see who responded.
Consider a Mother Agent
A great Mother Agent can be an incredible guide for your entire career from placements and contracts to development and overall support. My Mother Agent, Kelly Thomas has been such a steady presence and advocate for me.
Care for Your Body and Skin
Modeling isn’t about being “perfect” it’s about being your healthiest, most confident self. Prioritize skincare, rest, movement, and nutrition that helps you feel strong, radiant, and ready to show up as your best self on camera or in castings.
Be Professional
Your agency is your partner, not your boss. Be respectful of their time, communicate clearly, and always show up prepared. A good attitude goes a long way. Be someone they want to work with again and again.
Let Go of Comparison
Every model has a different path. Some get scouted. Some submit themselves. Some travel the world. Some stay close to home. Your journey will look different and that’s okay. Stay focused on your path and trust the timing.
Stay Grounded
This industry can move fast, but it’s important to stay rooted in who you are. Whether you’re traveling for jobs or waiting for your first booking, your identity should never be tied to your career alone.
Enjoy the Journey
Modeling is work, but it can also be a beautiful adventure. Take it one step at a time. Celebrate the milestones. Learn from the quiet seasons. And most of all, have fun with it.
Remember, There’s room for you here
You don’t need to be scouted. You don’t need to have a perfect portfolio. You just need to start. If modeling is something you’ve dreamed about, I hope this post gives you the encouragement and direction to take that next step.
