My Experience With Lymphatic Massage

I was first introduced to lymphatic massage through modeling and, admittedly, I originally tried it for a pretty simple reason: I wanted to feel my best before a photoshoot.

Over the years, I've tried a lot of different things in the name of shoot prep, from changing up my workouts to being more intentional about sleep, hydration, skincare, and what I'm eating. Some things stuck. Plenty didn't. Lymphatic massage is one of the things I genuinely came to love.

What started as something I scheduled before shoots became something I appreciated beyond how I looked. I love the ritual of slowing down, taking care of myself, and leaving a session feeling relaxed and refreshed.

So, if you've seen lymphatic massage all over your social feeds and wondered whether it's worth trying, here's my personal experience.

First, What Is a Lymphatic Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle massage technique intended to encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the body's lymphatic system.

You'll sometimes hear pretty dramatic wellness claims about lymphatic massage "detoxing" your body or causing fat loss. I don't look at it that way.

Your body already has organs responsible for removing waste, and lymphatic massage isn't a weight-loss treatment. For me, it's much simpler: I enjoy how I feel afterward, and I've personally noticed temporary changes in puffiness and fluid retention. That's what keeps me coming back.

I Notice a Difference in Puffiness

This is probably the biggest reason I initially loved lymphatic massage. I tend to notice puffiness in certain areas, particularly when I've been traveling, sitting for long periods, eating differently than usual, or simply not following my normal routine.

After a massage, I often feel less puffy and a little lighter. Before a photoshoot or event, that can make me feel more comfortable and confident.

I think it's important to distinguish that feeling from actual fat loss or permanent changes to your body. For me, it's about temporary fluid retention and how I personally feel afterward, not changing my body overnight.

It's Become a Form of Self-Care

This might actually be my favorite part now. There's something about setting aside an hour where I'm not answering emails, looking at my phone, working, or thinking about the next thing I need to accomplish.

I leave feeling relaxed and like I've done something intentional for myself. And while I originally viewed lymphatic massage almost entirely through the lens of appearance, I've come to appreciate the ritual just as much as the result.

Love It Before a Photoshoot or Event

If I have a photoshoot or an event coming up and want to book a massage, I usually prefer doing it ahead of time rather than making it a last-minute thing.

It's become one of those little rituals that helps me feel prepared, similar to getting my nails done, doing my skincare, getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and planning what I need for the day. Does a lymphatic massage magically transform how I look? No.

But do I usually leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and a little more confident? Absolutely. And sometimes feeling good going into something makes just as much of a difference.

You Don't Need a Photoshoot to Try One

This is probably what has changed the most about my relationship with lymphatic massage. I initially thought of it as something to do because of modeling. Now, I don't think you need a photoshoot, vacation, wedding, or special event on the calendar to justify taking care of yourself.

If you're curious about lymphatic massage, I'd approach it as a wellness or self-care experience rather than something that's going to dramatically change your body.

Find a qualified practitioner, communicate what you're hoping to get out of the session, and pay attention to how you feel afterward.

Would I Do It Again?

Yes, and I have. Lymphatic massage is one of those things I discovered through my career that has made its way into my regular self-care rotation. I love how relaxed I feel afterward, I personally notice a difference when I'm feeling particularly puffy, and I genuinely enjoy the experience.

For me, that's enough reason to keep it around.

As I've gotten older, I'm also trying to approach wellness a little differently. I'm less interested in doing things because I think I need to "fix" something about myself and more interested in routines that help me feel good, take care of myself, and show up feeling confident.

Lymphatic massage happens to be one of them.

This post shares my personal experience and is not medical advice. Lymphatic drainage massage isn't appropriate for everyone, particularly people with certain medical conditions, so talk with a qualified healthcare professional if you're unsure whether it's right for you.

Have you tried lymphatic massage? I'd love to know what you thought.
